Why I love Nourish The Children

Updated: Mar 21, 2018

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN LIVES OF CHILDREN

The Nourish the Children® initiative is Nu Skin®’s solution to providing a consistent and growing supply of nourishing food to the world’s most needy children. This simple concept succeeds by selling a highly nutritious food - VitaMeal - and then helping people donate their purchases to third-party non-profit organisations that specialise in distributing food to those suffering from malnutrition and famine.

The primary charity partner for Nourish the Children® is Feed The Children, one of the largest international charities in the United States, which specialises in distributing millions of pounds of food each year to families in more than 60 markets. The charity partner distributes the donated VitaMeal at no additional cost and provides regular reports documenting the receipt of food by those in need.

By donating a product rather than cash, donors know exactly how their contribution is being used and can be assured that their donation is making a difference in the lives of children.

While the VitaMeal itself is very important in impacting the lives of children, the donations go beyond just the meal to impact the lives of many others. These meal donations create opportunities to improve lives through education, jobs and teaching self-sufficiency.

Drawing Children to School

VitaMeal donations are generally distributed through school programmes because parents living in poverty will often send their children to school for a free meal, rather than keep them home to work. This is especially true of girls: the World Bank has recognised that “there is no investment more effective for achieving development goals than educating girls.”

Ensuring a Consistent Flow of Donations

As a social business initiative, Nourish the Children® facilitates consistent and increasing food donations by offering an incentive to buy, donate and promote VitaMeal. This commission is included in the price of the food and allows distributors to invest their time and resources to encourage others to join the cause against malnutrition. Your VitaMeal donation is increased with a corporate match programme from Nu Skin®.

Building Economic Opportunity

VitaMeal plants in Malawi and Mainland China reduce transportation costs and boost local economies.

Contributing to Self-Sufficiency

Some of the proceeds from VitaMeal purchases are donated to the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation® to fund agricultural education at Mtalimanja Village in Malawi. Increased farm production could someday alleviate the need for food assistance in Malawi.

Malnourished children are missing key nutrients in their diets, which can hinder brain, bone and immune system development. Most humanitarian food aid is grain, such as corn, which may lack certain essential nutrients for healthy development.

VitaMeal is specially formulated for malnourished children or family use and produced by Nu Skin® - a company with extensive experience in nutrition. Working with an expert in child malnutrition in third-world countries, Nu Skin® developed VitaMeal, which is vegetarian and non-dairy and allows for the easy addition of ingredients to fit every taste and culture. Each VitaMeal package contains 30 child-sized meals, or enough food to provide a child with one nutritious meal each day for a month.

VitaMeal provides:

  • A balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat and fibre

  • Essential fatty acids required for normal brain development, skin health and immune defence

  • Electrolytes necessary for maintaining normal fluid balance and muscle function

  • 25 essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A for normal sight and immune functions as well as nutrients for normal growth and skeletal development

(When I was recognised on stage for becoming an NTC Ambassador)

Ambassador

A Nourish the Children® (NTC) Ambassador is a person who has not only donated through NTC to nourish starving children but has adopted NTC as a personal cause. They and their first level (personal customers and first level Distributors) have made a commitment to donate a total of 16 bags of VitaMeal each month via Automatic Delivery Rewards (ADR) programme. This means the person donates at least 4 bags each month personally plus they have inspired their first level to donate enough bags that will bring the total number of bags donated up to 16 each month. Hence, many variations of combined donations are possible, for example:

• 4 bags personally + 12 first level • 5 bags personally + 11 first level • 10 bags personally + 6 first level • 16 bags personally + 0 first level

After two consecutive months of donating 16 bags, the Distributor becomes an Ambassador. Ambassadors receive a special Nourish the Children® Ambassador pin and certificate.

1-Year Ambassador, 2-Year Ambassador, etc.

Each year that an Ambassador completes the Nourish the Children® Ambassador requirements, a new certificate is sent to signify the number of years they have been a Nourish the Children® Ambassador (1-Year, 2-Year, 3-Year Ambassador, etc.) Moreover, an additional bag of VitaMeal will be sent in the Ambassador’s name to feed more hungry children throughout the world.

When one becomes a 5-Year Ambassador they receive the “Woman and Child” statue. This is a beautiful wooden, African hand-carved statue of a woman reaching down to pick up a child. It is a representation of the thousands of children our Ambassadors reach out to feed each day.

Chief Ambassador

A Chief Ambassador is an Ambassador who has inspired three others in the first level of their organisation to also become Ambassadors in the same month. These are individuals who are truly committed to nourishing children as demonstrated by their efforts to motivate others to participate.

The Chief Ambassador receives a special Chief Ambassador pin and certificate.

On their one-year anniversary as a Chief Ambassador they will receive a hand-carved, African walking stick. This walking stick was traditionally reserved for the village chief. It is a symbol of his great power, influence and love for his people. The Chief Stick is awarded to Chief Ambassadors of Nourish the Children® to recognise their unselfish commitment to feeding children throughout the world.

When one becomes a 5-Year Chief Ambassador they will receive a beautiful reproduction of the Nourish the Children® painting that represents the nearly 120,000 meals donated and the many smiling faces that these meals have brought to hungry children all over the world.

This initiative has touched my heart in many ways, and becoming an ambassador is one of my proudest achievements.
